The statistics regarding bone health are quite alarming.

There are over 183,000 broken bones (fractures) each year due to poor bone health. 50% of people with one fracture due to osteoporosis will have another. Half of all fractures occur in people over 50 years with osteopenia.

Osteoporosis develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decreases, changing the quality and structure of the bone. Osteopenia occurs when the protein and mineral content of bone tissue reduces, but less severely than in osteoporosis. Many people have no symptoms until they have a fracture.

If you have had a bone density test recently, you may be confused with what your results mean. Women in post-menopause and men above 50 receive their results with a T-score. The lower the T-score, the higher the risk of fracture. A score of -1 or above indicates healthy bone density. -1 to -2.5 indicates osteopenia and -2.5 or lower may suggest osteoporosis.

The risk of a fracture increases by 1.5 - 2 times with each 1-point drop on the T-score.

What does Southside Physiotherapy offer?

At Southside Physiotherapy, we have helped countless patients through tailored home exercise programs targeting bone density. Unfortunately, we have seen an increase in people coming into our practice asking for advice due to a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis.

To better assist our community with their bone health, our physiotherapists have developed a program centered around group circuit classes.

Exercise management of osteoporosis must include three key components. These are

progressive resistance training to enhance strength and stability, impact activities to stimulate bone osteogenesis, and balance training to improve stability and prevent falls.

Our program will include:

• Initial Assessment to establish baseline measures and gain

a comprehensive history for each individual

• Group Exercise Classes where participants will engage in

twice-weekly physiotherapist led group exercise sessions

over 10 weeks

• Home Exercise Program tailored to each individual

depending on their goals and presentation

Our Stronger Bones classes will begin in mid-January 2025.
